Parabens and SLS in Dog Shampoo: Are They Harmful?

· Ingredients & Science, Care Guides

Parabens and SLS appear in most commercial dog shampoos. Here's what they actually are, why they're a problem, and what to use instead.

Parabens and SLS appear in most commercial pet shampoos. Here’s what they actually are, why owners are increasingly avoiding them, and what to use instead.

What are parabens?

Parabens are a chemical compound of para-hydroxybenzoic acid. They’re used as preservatives — they fight bacteria and fungus, they’re widely available, and they cost almost nothing to manufacture. That’s why they end up in millions of grooming products around the world.

Nearly all the parabens used as preservatives in commercial products are man-made, not naturally occurring. (Naturally occurring parabens have been found in blueberries, oddly enough — but the ones in your dog’s shampoo aren’t coming from a fruit.)

In view of the various scientific studies on parabens over recent years, many dog owners are now opting for paraben-free products just to be on the safe side. Parabens appear in many pet grooming products and can cause severe irritation to a dog’s skin and fur if your pet has a reaction.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

SLS is what makes skin products foam — and it’s found in most that do.

Animals exposed to SLS can experience eye damage, depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation, and even death. SLS may damage the skin’s immune system and can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens. SLS has been shown to remain in the body for up to five days, maintaining residual levels in the heart, lungs, liver and brain.

If it foams, it most likely contains SLS — unless the label specifically says otherwise.

The Dermagic position

All Dermagic organic skincare products for pets are paraben-free and SLS-free. We know how sensitive pet skin can be, so we only formulate with natural, high-quality ingredients that actually work — no preservative shortcuts.

A better way to bathe

If you’ve never tried bathing your dog with a shampoo bar, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. The bars naturally foam, smell wonderful, last far longer than a bottle of shampoo, and avoid the mess of bottles and lids entirely. They’re also packaged in recycled card — no plastic bottle to throw away.

The range of Dermagic organic pet shampoos and shampoo bars is paraben-free, SLS-free, and formulated to work with your pet’s skin rather than against it.

Frequently asked questions

What are parabens?
Parabens are a chemical compound of para-hydroxybenzoic acid used as preservatives — to fight bacteria and fungus in cosmetic and grooming products. Most parabens in commercial products are synthetic. They occur naturally in a few foods, blueberries among them, but the ones in your dog’s shampoo aren’t natural in origin.
Why are parabens a problem for pets?
Parabens can cause severe irritation to a dog’s skin and fur if your pet reacts to them. Given the volume of scientific scrutiny around parabens in recent years, many dog owners are choosing paraben-free products just to be on the safe side.
What is SLS?
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is the foaming agent in most skin products that lather. In animals, SLS exposure has been linked to eye damage, depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation and, in extreme cases, death. It may damage the skin’s immune system and can be transformed into nitrosamines, a class of carcinogens.
Are Dermagic products paraben and SLS free?
Yes. Every Dermagic skincare product is free from parabens and SLS. We only use natural high-quality ingredients because we know how sensitive pet skin can be — and we make products that work without resorting to harsh synthetics.
Why use a shampoo bar?
Shampoo bars naturally foam without SLS, last longer than bottled shampoo, come in recycled card rather than plastic bottles, and are easier to handle in the bath. They smell good, work on both long and short coats, and rinse cleanly.
